Johannesburg’s Victoria Yards will come alive once again on June 21, 2025, as the Fête de la Musique returns for its 14th year—bringing fresh sounds, vibrant culture, and a serious commitment to shaping South Africa’s creative future.
This year’s event brings things full circle, with local stars Sun-El Musician and Bongeziwe Mabandla returning to headline the festival that helped launch their careers over a decade ago.
But Fête de la Musique is not just about who’s on stage—it’s about who’s next.
At the heart of the festival is its partnership with the Live Music Lab, a one-of-a-kind mentorship and training programme that gives young creatives real-life experience in the live events and music industries. Trainees shadow professionals at events, learn both hard and soft skills, and get a foot in the door through networking.
“Mentorship is everything,” says co-organiser Brad Holmes, also the founder of the legendary Bassline Jazz Club.
“Many young people have the passion, but no direction. A mentor can help them see a path, sharpen their focus, and make the right connections.”
Holmes says it’s not just about teaching skills, but building confidence and community. “The industry thrives on relationships. Knowing someone who believes in you—and who can connect you to the right space—makes all the difference.”
And the results prove it: of the first 30 people trained through the Live Music Lab, 19 are now permanently employed in the music and events industry. Two current trainees are already working directly with Holmes himself.
Beyond developing behind-the-scenes talent, the festival is also stepping up its support for emerging artists. This year’s artist workshop will focus on business know-how—like how to host your own shows and navigate the industry after the applause ends.
“It’s no longer enough to just perform. You need the tools to manage your career. That’s what we’re aiming to provide,” Holmes adds.
As Youth Month shines a spotlight on the next generation, Holmes shares advice for anyone looking to break into the entertainment world:
“Stay curious, stay flexible, and above all—never give up.”
