South African DJ and cultural tastemaker Khetsiwe Morgan, popularly known as DJ Doowap, took over the centre stage at Paris Fashion Week on Thursday, June 26. A champion of local sound and creativity, Doowap is set to bring a vibrant dose of South African music and fashion to the global spotlight.
This marks her seventh appearance at the prestigious event, and excitement is running high. Reflecting on her continued participation, Doowap told Independent Media Lifestyle:
“Every time it feels amazing. I love the energy around Fashion Week.”
She highlighted the increasing presence of South Africans at this year’s edition, saying:
“There are so many South Africans participating this year, doing pop-ups, and throwing events. It’s a fantastic way to connect with individuals from all around the world who share my passion for fashion.”
Doowap is set to perform at the widely anticipated Jerk and Jollof event, an international celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture through food, music, and dance. Her set promises a high-energy fusion of local genres:
“I think it’s going to be insane. I’ve got a dope set ready for them – it’s going to be a mix of Amapiano, Bacardi and some Gqom with a lot of dancing and high energy.”
When it comes to the synergy between music and fashion, Doowap views both as intertwined art forms:
“Music and fashion are both great forms of expression. They share a kind of reflection of what individuals feel inside and how they want to present themselves to the world.”
“The music definitely brings a designer’s vision to life and deepens the audience’s connection to the show.”
On the fashion front, Doowap has collaborated with acclaimed South African designer Nao Serati for her Paris looks, combining two-piece outfits and Pantsula-inspired streetwear to reflect her distinct style. She explained her fashion approach:
“I’m always searching for unique fashion pieces; I even work with my seamstress to create custom outfits because I’m not one for mall shopping.”
Having DJed for over a decade, Doowap considers each international performance a meaningful step in her artistic journey:
“I’ve been DJing for over a decade, and every chance to perform internationally is a blessing. Each time I return to Paris, the excitement and the stages grow larger.”
Fresh off her latest release, “Seroba Ke Seh”, a fiery Bacardi-inspired track co-produced by Enny Man Da Guitar, Doowap is thrilled by the song’s reception:
“Everybody wants to see what South Africa is doing right now; they’re loving our vibe. And when I play ‘Seroba Ke Seh’, it sets the mood for joy.”
As part of her European tour, DJ Doowap’s upcoming performance at Paris Fashion Week isn’t just another gig—it’s a cultural statement. A proud ambassador of South African music, fashion, and youth culture, she continues to inspire globally while staying deeply rooted in her local heritage.
