Dipuo Peters Pays Nearly R193,000 After Sheriff Moves to Seize Vehicle

Former transport minister and current municipal speaker Dipuo Peters has settled a legal bill of nearly R193,000 after a sheriff arrived at her home to enforce a court order linked to outstanding legal costs.

The enforcement action followed a writ of execution issued after Peters failed to pay costs awarded against her in a long-running legal dispute related to her unsuccessful challenge of a parliamentary ethics ruling.

When the sheriff arrived at her residence in Kimberley, a vehicle was identified as part of the asset recovery process to cover the outstanding debt. Faced with enforcement, Peters ultimately agreed to settle the full amount on the same day.

The payment brought an end to the immediate attempt to attach her assets, and the matter was subsequently closed once the debt was cleared in full.

The legal costs stem from a case in which Peters challenged findings that she had breached parliamentary conduct rules linked to her time as transport minister. Her application was dismissed, and she was ordered to cover the legal expenses incurred by the opposing parties.

Despite earlier attempts to recover the funds through formal demand letters, payment was not made, leading to the issuance of enforcement measures earlier this year.

The case has drawn renewed public attention due to the involvement of a high-profile political figure and the enforcement action taken at her private residence, highlighting the legal consequences of unpaid court-ordered costs.

With the matter now resolved financially, no further immediate enforcement action is expected unless additional legal issues arise from related proceedings.
