A long-delayed, multi-billion rand tourism development on South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal North Coast is finally approaching its opening, marking a major milestone for one of the country’s most ambitious hospitality projects.
The development, known as the Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari resort, is valued at around R2 billion and has been in the making for several years, facing construction hurdles and broader regional disruptions along the way. It is now expected to officially welcome guests in July 2026.
The resort is being positioned as a first-of-its-kind destination, combining a coastal beach experience with access to a nearby Big Five safari reserve. The dual-concept design allows visitors to experience both ocean and wildlife tourism within a single stay something not previously offered under the global Club Med portfolio.
The project includes hundreds of accommodation units, a large convention centre, and a range of leisure and family-focused facilities. It also features an integrated safari lodge experience located within a protected game reserve, expanding its appeal to both international and domestic travellers.
Construction on the site began in 2024 and has progressed in phases, with major infrastructure components such as roads, utilities, and buildings reaching advanced stages over time. Despite early delays and logistical setbacks, the development has now entered its final preparation phase ahead of launch.
Beyond tourism, the project has also been promoted as a significant economic driver for the region. Thousands of jobs have been created during construction, with long-term employment expected once the resort becomes operational. Local training initiatives have also been introduced to prepare workers for roles in hospitality and tourism.
Industry observers say the opening could boost KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast as a premium travel destination, attracting international visitors and encouraging further investment in surrounding areas.
Once operational, the resort is expected to position itself as one of the most high-end integrated tourism offerings in the country, blending luxury accommodation, nature-based experiences, and large-scale hospitality infrastructure in a single destination.
