Kelly Khumalo Clarifies Her Spiritual Journey and Pushes Back Against “Sangoma” Label

Award-winning singer Kelly Khumalo has opened up about her deeply personal spiritual journey, addressing widespread misconceptions about her identity and beliefs. In a candid video shared on Instagram, the outspoken star made it clear that, despite public perception, she does not identify as a sangoma.

“I’m not a sangoma. I’m just a child of the spirit,” Khumalo said, responding to the growing tendency for people to label her a traditional healer.

The singer explained that while she has gone through spiritual initiation, she prefers not to be boxed into a title that doesn’t fully reflect who she is. “When someone says that I’m a sangoma, I get annoyed,” she admitted. “I’ve suppressed this for a while but now I feel that I should just let people know.”

Khumalo described her spirituality as something far more fluid and individual. Rather than adopting a formal role within traditional healing structures, she sees herself as someone who is simply in touch with her gifts. “I’m just a woman with gifts and I have access to them, and I use them,” she said.

Reflecting on her initiation process, Khumalo revealed that it was not an easy path. She spoke about how the experience took a toll on her physically and emotionally, at times leaving her feeling unwell for years until she found alignment with her true self. Despite having gone through initiation on multiple occasions, she insists that it does not define her identity.

“I recognise ubungoma and I respect those who are called to it; however, I am not umngoma,” she said, underlining her respect for traditional healers while firmly distancing herself from the label.

Khumalo also used the moment to encourage others to honour their own spiritual instincts. “Listen to your body,” she urged, cautioning people against forcing themselves into paths that don’t feel right for them.

Her message struck a chord with many followers, with several social media users saying her words helped them better understand their own spiritual callings.

Beyond her spiritual reflections, Khumalo is also enjoying a new chapter in her music career. She recently released her eleventh studio album, Rebirth, which she has described as a powerful reflection of both her personal and artistic transformation a fitting title for a woman who continues to redefine herself on her own terms.
