South African DJ and producer DJ Maphorisa has revealed that he is stepping away from Amapiano and returning to Afro music, a genre he calls his original musical home. The move marks a major turning point for one of the most influential figures in modern African music.
Maphorisa shared the news with fans on Instagram, where he reflected on the growth of Amapiano and his role in helping it reach global recognition. Having been one of the architects behind the genre’s explosive rise, he suggested that Amapiano has now matured to a point where it no longer needs his constant involvement.
“Amapiano is in good hands. I’m going back to my roots where it all started, AFRO,” Maphorisa wrote.
A Legacy Built Across Genres
For more than 15 years, DJ Maphorisa has been at the forefront of South African music, shaping trends and pushing local sounds onto international stages. From Afro-house and Gqom to Amapiano, his influence has been felt across multiple genres, while his collaborations and mentorship have helped launch and elevate numerous artists.
His decision to step back from Amapiano does not signal a rejection of the genre, but rather an acknowledgment of its strength and sustainability. With a new generation of producers and DJs carrying the sound forward, Maphorisa believes the movement is firmly established.
“The sound has grown beyond me,” he has often hinted in past interviews. “Now it belongs to everyone.”
A New Chapter Begins
Music industry observers see his return to Afro music as the beginning of a fresh creative chapter. Known for constantly reinventing himself, Maphorisa’s shift is expected to bring renewed energy and innovation to Afro sounds, just as he previously did with Amapiano.
While fans may be nostalgic about his Amapiano era, many are eager to hear what he will deliver next, confident that wherever Maphorisa goes, the sound is bound to evolve.
“Every phase of my journey has been about pushing African music forward,” Maphorisa once said a philosophy that continues to define his career as he steps into this new phase.
