Umthakathi Kush Looks to Expand His Storytelling Through Amapiano

Rising amapiano artist Umthakathi Kush is proving that his music is about more than just dancefloor energy it is about telling stories that reflect real life, especially the experiences of young people navigating the streets of Johannesburg.

Coming from Alexandra, Kush says rhythm has always been part of his world. From the sounds of taxis and street vendors to the pulse of nightlife, his surroundings have shaped the way he hears and creates music. Instead of just chasing trends, he is using amapiano as a platform to express emotion, struggle and truth.

His breakout track “Heke”, created alongside DJ MyDowa and Tman Xpress, introduced audiences to that vision. The song paints a vivid picture of temptation, ambition and the hidden dangers that often come with chasing fast success.

“The song is really about the risks people take when they are drawn to glamour and easy money,” Kush explains. “It shows the side of the story that many don’t want to talk about.”

The message struck a chord with listeners because it felt honest. While the beat keeps people dancing, the lyrics encourage reflection, showing how dreams can sometimes come with heavy consequences.

Now Kush is preparing to take that storytelling even further with an upcoming EP titled Vutomi I Vhilwa. The project is expected to explore themes such as survival, self-discovery and the emotional weight of growing up in a fast-moving city. It aims to blend the soulful side of amapiano with narratives that feel personal and relatable.

Collaboration continues to be a big part of Kush’s creative process. Working with DJ MyDowa’s production style and Tman Xpress’s powerful vocals allowed the music to grow into something deeper than just a club track.

“When we came together, the song became more than just sound,” he says. “It became a story people could connect with.”

As he builds his catalogue, Umthakathi Kush is positioning himself as an artist who brings meaning to the music. His goal is clear to create amapiano that not only moves people physically, but also speaks to their lives and experiences.
