Hawks secure forfeiture of R339,200 Toyota Fortuner after explosives found hidden inside vehicle in Mpumalanga

The High Court has ordered that a Toyota Fortuner worth R339,200 be forfeited to the state after police found six explosives hidden in the vehicle in Dientjie, Mpumalanga.

The Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit obtained the order on October 12, 2026.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi said police stopped the white Fortuner at about 12.30pm on March 12, 2025, while conducting a routine patrol.

Officers searching the vehicle found two explosives marked “Super Power” in a cup holder beside the gear lever. They then discovered another four of the same type concealed in the left front door panel.

Both occupants were arrested and held at Dientjie Police Station. Police seized the Fortuner and registered it as an exhibit in the investigation.

The forfeiture order was granted more than a year after the seizure, transferring the vehicle to the state.

Brigadier Bruce Davenport, the acting provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, welcomed the ruling and commended the cooperation between the agencies.

Davenport said the Hawks were committed to bringing those involved in crime before the courts and depriving them of assets used to facilitate, or benefit from, unlawful conduct. He said cooperation with law enforcement partners would continue to tackle criminal networks and protect communities from serious and organised crime.

The Hawks said recovering assets was an important part of combating such offences.

Members of the public were urged to report suspicious activity involving explosives or other illegal substances to their nearest police station, or anonymously through the SAPS Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111.
