Mediamec Samsung is reportedly preparing to take a major leap in mobile innovation with a new rollable smartphone concept that may arrive in 2026, signalling a shift away from traditional foldable designs toward more flexible display technology.
At the centre of the concept is a motorised rollable display system that allows the device to physically expand from a standard smartphone size into a much larger screen when needed. Instead of folding along a hinge like current Galaxy Z models, the display is said to extend smoothly from within the handset, creating a seamless transition between compact and expanded modes.
The expanded screen is expected to reach tablet-like proportions, making the device suitable for productivity tasks such as multitasking, media consumption, and creative work. When retracted, however, the phone returns to a pocket-friendly form factor, aiming to balance portability with versatility.
One of the key selling points of the design is the elimination of the visible crease commonly found in foldable devices. By using a rolling mechanism rather than a folding joint, Samsung is reportedly targeting a cleaner, uninterrupted display experience, which could appeal to users who prioritise screen quality and durability concerns.
The concept also points toward enhanced user interaction, with speculation that the larger display could support advanced multitasking features and stylus input, positioning the device as a hybrid between smartphone and mini-tablet functionality.
Although still in the conceptual or early development stage, the rollable phone reflects Samsung’s broader strategy of exploring alternative form factors beyond the established foldable category. If brought to market, it would represent one of the most significant design changes in smartphones in recent years, potentially reshaping how users interact with mobile devices.
