Dankie Boi, Blacks Jnr & GoldMax Launch a New Era for Gqom with ‘New Wave

Veteran and emerging gqom artists Dankie Boi, Blacks Jnr and GoldMax are positioning themselves at the forefront of a new generation of gqom with their recently released project New Wave.

“New Wave” a 16-track body of work isn’t just another album, but a reimagining of gqom that honours its Durban township roots while pushing the genre forward with fresh melodies and soundscapes.

According to Dankie Boi, the goal wasn’t to overhaul gqom, but to evolve it keeping the genre’s heavy drums, raw energy and dark intensity intact, while layering in more musical and global elements to broaden its appeal.

The album captures the hustle, spirit, and vibrant life of Durban’s communities the taxis, street dances, youth culture, and weekend energy giving listeners a visceral sense of where gqom comes from.

Through this collaboration, Dankie Boi, Blacks Jnr and GoldMax aim to carry the torch forward: preserving gqom’s authenticity while ushering in a modern, expansive sound that can reach beyond South Africa’s townships and onto global dance floors.
