One of South Africa’s most recognisable petrol station brands is fast becoming a thing of the past as the nationwide transformation from Caltex to Astron Energy moves closer to completion.
The rebranding project, which began in 2022, has now reached a major milestone, with hundreds of service stations already converted under the new identity. This signals the near end of the iconic Caltex name that has been part of the country’s roads and highways for decades.
Astron Energy has steadily rolled out its fresh orange and purple branding across the country, replacing the familiar blue Caltex image that generations of South Africans grew up with. The company’s expanding footprint now places it among the country’s largest fuel retail networks, with the finish line for the full transition now clearly in sight.
Beyond the cosmetic changes, the rebrand reflects a bigger strategic shift in South Africa’s fuel sector. The move follows Glencore’s takeover of Chevron’s Southern African assets, a deal that gave the company control over one of the nation’s most established petroleum operations.
The transition is not only visible on forecourts but also ties into broader investments in refining and distribution infrastructure. Astron Energy’s Cape Town refinery remains a key part of domestic fuel production, supplying petrol, diesel, jet fuel and other essential products to both local and regional markets.
For many motorists, the disappearance of the Caltex name marks the closing chapter of a brand that has long been woven into South Africa’s driving culture. From road trips and late-night fill-ups to convenience stops on national routes, the brand has held a nostalgic place in everyday life.
While the branding may be changing, the company says its focus remains on maintaining fuel quality, safety standards and a consistent customer experience as the final stations are converted.
As the rollout enters its final phase, South Africans may soon find that the once-familiar Caltex forecourt has all but vanished, officially ending one of the country’s most iconic fuel brand eras.
