President Ramaphosa Speaks Tonight on South Africa’s G20 Presidency

President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Sunday evening from the Union Buildings, reflecting on South Africa’s hosting of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg.

According to a short statement issued by the Presidency, the 19:00 address will focus on the key outcomes of South Africa’s G20 presidency.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa will tonight, Sunday, 30 November 2025, address the nation following the country’s Presidency of the G20 and successful hosting of the Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg.”

The national address comes as South Africa continues to navigate the aftermath of the recent G20 summit, which was overshadowed by diplomatic tensions with the United States regarding both the level of US representation at the event and the ceremonial handover of the G20 presidency.

South Africa declined to pass the presidency to a junior official from the US Embassy, insisting that only a head of state, senior minister, or special envoy was appropriate for the formal transfer.

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump announced that South Africa would not receive an invitation to the 2026 G20 summit in Miami, linking the exclusion to the handover dispute and expressing concerns about human rights in the country.

IOL previously reported that President Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the President had taken note of the US statement on South Africa’s G20 status.

“South Africa will continue to participate as a full, active and constructive member of the G20,” Magwenya said.

He added:

“We call on all members of the G20 to reaffirm its continued operation in the spirit of multilateralism, based on consensus, with all members participating on an equal footing in all of its structures. It is regrettable that, despite the efforts and numerous attempts by President Ramaphosa and his administration to reset diplomatic relations with the United States, President Trump continues to apply punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions.”
